April 27, 1907 - December 7, 1949
My father, Sam, was born in Turger Maras, Hungary. He had two older brothers: William/Bill (Flossie) and Dave (Frances), and four sisters: Dr. Irene, Gizella, Sarah, and Regina. Bill worked at Gilbert Shoes in Columbus for many years. Dave owned a general clothing retail store in Columbus. Irene had a Ph.D. in Medicine and was a professor at the University of Wyoming. She write a book on the element Selenium. Gizella was a registered pharmacist and bought the drug store where she worked for many years. Sarah worked in the retail business at Lazarus Department Store in Columbus, Ohio. Regina worked with her husband, Isadore, in Dayton, Ohio, who was an optometrist.
My father came to the United States at the age of thirteen and it is said his Bar Mitzvah was on the boat. He came in 1920 with his mother and four sisters who lived in Hungary during WWI. They owned a tavern during the war years. My grandfather had come to United States before WWI with his two older sons. United States changed the immigration quotas in 1921. I am forever grateful that my grandfather Sam was able to send the proper tickets so they could come to USA.
After Sam came to the United States, he met Pauline Ruben. and they were married in 1932.
My father learned English and went to Ohio State University and then was able to graduate from University of Chicago Rush Medical School.
Sam and Pauline had three children. Their first son, Robert, was born in Chicago, January 1, 1934 while Sam was in Medical School. He did his internship (residency) at the Cleveland Clinic. Joyce was born June 23, 1938. Jerry was born November 7, 1944 and died January 18, 2014 at the age of 69.
Sam became an Associate Professor of Medicine at Ohio State University in addition to his private medical practice. He died at a young age of 42 from a heart attack on December 7, 1949 while driving to teach a class at Ohio State University.
